Stability of Palatini-f(R) cosmology

چکیده
The evolution of linear cosmological perturbations in modified theories of gravity is investigated assuming the Palatini formalism. It has been discussed about the stability problem in this model based on the equivalence between f(R) gravity and the scalar tensor theory. However, we study this problem in the physical frame where the matter is minimally coupled. In general, the stability of the superhorizon metric evolution depends on models. We show that the deviation from the superhorizon metric evolution is null for a specific choice for the nonlinear Einstein-Hilbert action, f(R̂) ∼ R̂, where n 6= 0, 2, 3. Thus the stability of metric fluctuation is guaranteed in these models. We also study the matter density fluctuation in the general gauge and show the differential equations in super and sub-horizon scales.

A no-go theorem for polytropic spheres in Palatini f(R) gravity
Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are commonly-used equations of state for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, casting doubt on whether Palatini f(R) gravity can be consider...
متن کاملf(R) theories of gravity
Modified gravity theories have received increased attention lately due to combined motivation coming from high-energy physics, cosmology and astrophysics. Among numerous alternatives to Einstein’s theory of gravity, theories which include higher order curvature invariants, and specifically the particular class of f(R) theories, have a long history. In the last five years there has been a new st...

We shall investigate the properties of a congruence of geodesics in the framework of Palatini f(R) theories. We shall evaluate the modified geodesic deviation equation and the Raychaudhuri’s equation and show that f(R) Palatini theories do not necessarily lead to attractive forces. Also we shall study energy condition for f(R) Palatini gravity via a perturbative analysis of the Raychaudhuri’s e...
متن کاملExtension of the EGS theorem to metric and Palatini f(R) gravity
By using the equivalence between metric and Palatini f(R) (or “modified”) gravities with ω = 0,−3/2 Brans-Dicke theories, it is shown that the EhlersGeren-Sachs theorem of general relativity is extended to modified gravity. In the case of metric f(R) gravity studied before, this agrees with previous literature.
متن کاملThe metric-affine formalism of f(R) gravity
Recently a class of alternative theories of gravity which goes under the name f(R) gravity, has received considerable attention, mainly due to its interesting applications in cosmology. However, the phenomenology of such theories is not only relevant to cosmological scales, especially when it is treated within the framework of the so called Palatini variation, an independent variation with resp...
